Apple has announced the third generation of its iPad tablet. The new device - called simply ‘new iPad’ rather than iPad 3 - has a higher-resolution display, Apple’s new A5X chip and a 5 megapixel camera. In addition, Apple has cut the retail price for iPad 2 devices.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said “The new iPad redefines the category Apple created less than two years ago, delivering the most amazing experience people have ever had with technology. The new iPad now has the highest resolution display ever seen on a mobile device with 3.1 million pixels, delivering razor sharp text and unbelievable detail in photos and videos.”

The new iPad has a ‘Retina’ display with 3.1 million pixels, Apple’s dual-core A5X chip with quad-core graphics and a 5 megapixel camera with video image stabilization. There’ll be WiFi-only and WiFi+mobile versions, with 4G LTE connectivity available on the mobile-enabled iPads.

Apple’s new iPad will go on sale in the USA and the UK from Friday 16th March, with pricing from £399 (US $499) for the 16GB WiFi model and from $629 for the mobile-enabled tablet.
