Child-friendly mobile phone suffers pre-launch backlash

Security and children are hot topics for any industry. Combine them into a mobile phone and there’ll be some strong opinions. That’s what Your Mobile has found after announcing that their child-friendly mobile phone will be arriving in the UK later this year. The Firefly is already on sale in Ireland, brought from the USA by husband and wife team Kevin and Frances Crean who became fans of the phone after their 6-year-old daughter had a health scare while away at a camp.

The Firefly mobile phone, which includes a number of security and parental control features, is currently available SIM-free from Your Mobile – although the launch of the company’s glowPhone and flyPhone devices has been delayed “due to circumstances outside our control”.

This week The Times and The Telegraph have both run ‘Firefly’ articles featuring that raise concerns about parental responsibility and health. The Guardian’s Tim Dowling also isn’t a fan, although his article is rather more humorous.
