EU says its OK for 3G devices to use GSM frequencies

As originally proposed in November last year, the EU has cleared the way for mobile networks in Europe to use GSM 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies for 3G devices as well as for 2G phones. The previous rules on GSM frequencies had been in place since the GSM Directive of 1987, which set out the rules for Groupe Spécial Mobile (now Global System for Mobile) technology. Using GSM frequencies for 3G mobile broadband already forms part of the UK’s Digital Britain strategy. [EC press release]
