HP releases Open webOS 1.0

Already ported to HP PC and Nexus smartphone

Last year HP decided to stop producing tablets and phones that ran its webOS mobile operating system, later deciding to contribute its webOS software to the open source community.

It’s now released the first full version of the operating system, Open webOS 1.0, which can be ported to new devices. Open webOS 1.0 includes email, a browser and support for cross-platform app development framework Enyo.

The new OS was first demonstrated on a HP TouchSmart PC, closely followed by the WebOS Ports team porting webOS to a Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

The Palm Pre was a highly underrated phone and had huge potential, a lot more than Android at the same stage in it's evolution. But it's all about marketing, business deals and not just about technical quality. I hope HP will bundle it in all their products and produce a light weight fast option for tablet users wanting simple email, browsing and apps. Good luck.
