Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has revealed a ‘smartwatch’ that runs the Android Wear platform on a Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor. Simply called the Huawei Watch, this new wearable technology is being shown at Mobile World Congress 2015.

It’s a conventional-looking device with a circular face in a stainless steel frame, although it includes a 1.4-inch (400 x 400 pixel) touch-sensitive AMOLED display behind a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens. Built-in features include a heart rate monitor, barometer and motion sensors.

Android Wear, which is compatible with smartphones running Android v4.3 or above, enables the watch to provide notifications for SMS, email, calendar, phone calls and other applications.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, said “We have responded to consumers’ requests from around the world asking for a smartwatch featuring a timeless design that is truly smart from within. Through Huawei’s continued commitment to ‘Make It Possible’, the Huawei Watch delivers on that promise and gives the consumer a premium smartwatch that is technologically innovative. As the first smartwatch in our expanding line of premium wearable products, the Huawei Watch was designed and created to enhance and be part of the consumer’s everyday lives.”

Huawei has confirmed that its watch will be available in the UK, although a release date and pricing haven’t been announced.
