New research suggests business apps could be the next target for mobile developers

A new report from research2guidance shows that the average Android application has generated $2,437 (around £1,540) since being published. However, this cumulative revenue figure varied dramatically between categories, with the average paid Weather app having generated $21,000 but the average multimedia app only making $300. The average selling price of a chargeable app was $3.13.

Nearly a quarter of all Android Market app downloads are games, although research2motion says the intense competition in this segment means the potential for making money is “rather mediocre”.

Conversely, the relatively low number of Weather apps has generated the highest average revenue per app. research2motion notes “it is very difficult for developers to make yet-another great weather app”, suggesting instead that the Business category could be a practical choice for developers in the future. This area currently contains 7,000 apps, of which only 13% are paid.

At the end of August 2011, the Android Market contained 277,252 apps according to the report.
