A study of mobile and tablet users in the USA has found that the iPhone 5 came fifth for user satisfaction, with Android devices taking the top four places. Mobile research company On Device Research asked over 93,000 US-based mobile users to rank device satisfaction from 1 to 10.

The most satisfying device was the Motorola Atrix HD, a 4G LTE smartphone launched in July last year. It scored 8.57, followed by the Motorola Droid Razr M with 8.5, the HTC Rezound 4G with 8.32 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ‘phablet’ with 8.23. The iPhone 5’s score was 8.23.

On Device Research points out that all top five handsets were 4G-capable devices, noting that users who had a 4G subscription reported higher satisfaction with their device than those without. Similarly, users with a 4G subscription were also more satisfied with their network operator.

Sarah Quinn, Marketing Manager at On Device Research, said “Although Apple created one of the most revolutionary devices of the past decade, other manufacturers have caught up, with some Android powered devices now commanding higher levels of user satisfaction. The 4G impact on device and consequently network operator satisfaction is really interesting. It’s also a great opportunity for operators, with 4G uptake having a positive impact on not only satisfaction, but also revenue and loyalty.”

In the UK - which currently has just one 4G mobile operator - the iPhone 5 ranked second for user satisfaction behind the HTC One X.
