The Barclays Pingit person-to-person mobile payment service is now available to customers from all UK banks and building societies. Barclays Pingit, which was launched in February to Barclays customers, allows users to send and receive money by using a mobile phone number instead of requiring bank account and sort code details.
Available to Apple iOS, Android and BlackBerry users, the Barclays Pingit app has been downloaded over 400,000 times in its first eight weeks. Users of other mobile phones can register to receive payments via text message.
Antony Jenkins, Chief Executive of Retail and Business Banking at Barclays, said “Barclays Pingit is proving to be more popular than even we were expecting and from today the customers of all UK banks and building societies can also benefit. The ability to make simple payments to whoever they want, wherever they are, instantly and securely, is making many people’s lives much easier. Barclays Pingit is potentially a revolution in banking but this is just the beginning. We are listening to customer feedback and monitoring the demand for additional functionality so there’s a lot more to come over the next few months.”
Barclays is currently running a promotional campaign via Facebook, encouraging users to settle any debts between friends with Barclays Pingit.
