LG passes milestone of five million 4G LTE smartphones

Although 4G LTE phones haven’t yet been given a UK launch, they’re selling well abroad.

LG Electronics has just passed global sales of five million LTE smartphones, having sold a million in July alone. The company’s first LTE smartphone - the Revolution - was released in the USA last May, with the worldwide range now having expanded into double figures.

With sales of two million units, the LG Optimus LTE is the company’s most-popular LTE smartphone. However, its successor - the Optimus LTE II - is LG’s fastest-selling LTE smartphone, having sold half a million units in the first 70 days following its May 2012 launch.

Dr Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company, said “Sales of global LTE smartphones are expected to increase ten-fold this year from last year. With that in mind, we are planning to introduce an even more impressive LTE line-up in the next several months second to none.”

LG is seen as the global leader in LTE patents, both in terms of quantity and value. The company’s patent portfolio was recently valued at over $8 billion (£5.1 billion).
