T-Mobile UK backtracks on 'fair usage' data plans for existing customers

T-Mobile UK has changed its mind on its mobile data policy. On Monday it announced that it would be reducing its ‘Fair Use Policy’ for mobile data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers from February.

However, following a number of well-publicised customer complaints – and what the network operator describes as “a further review of our policy” – it says the changes will now only be introduced to new and upgrading customers. There’ll be no change to data packages for existing customers.

In a statement, Lysa Hardy, Vice President of T-Mobile Propositions, said “We apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users.”

New and upgrading customers who exceed their monthly 500MB data allowance won’t be charged extra. They’ll still be able to access email and web browsing but will have file downloading and streaming services restricted. Buying an optional ‘Mobile Broadband Booster’ will increase the monthly allowance to 1GB.
