Vodafone Egypt has made its position very clear during the current troubles in the country.
Last weekend it advised that “all mobile operators in Egypt have been instructed to suspend services in selected areas”, later restoring service and explaining “there were no legal or practical options open… but to comply with the demands of the authorities”.
Yesterday it went further, complaining about the messages being sent over Egyptian mobile networks by the government. “These messages are not scripted by any of the mobile network operators and we do not have the ability to respond to the authorities on their content. Vodafone Group has protested to the authorities that the current situation regarding these messages is unacceptable. We have made clear that all messages should be transparent and clearly attributable to the originator”.
During the crisis the network is keeping ‘pay monthly’ customers connected regardless of unpaid bills and is offering one Egyptian Pound of credit per day to prepay customers who have a zero balance on their account.
