New figures from GfK Retail and Technology UK show that the Android operating system is becoming increasingly popular. Smartphones accounted for almost half of all mobile phone sales in February 2011 (48.7%). When it came to ‘pay monthly’ contracts, 83.1% were smartphones… which means only a sixth of all contract phones sold were non-smart.
34.1% of all smartphones sold in February ran the Android operating system, with 32.8% of ‘contract’ phones running Android. That’s up from just 6.6% of the total market for the same month last year.
Overall, the total handset market was down 1.8% year-on-year.
