Unofficial updates to Windows Phone 7 will prevent future updates from working

Microsoft has warned that Windows Phone handsets which have previously been ‘updated’ using an unofficial process may not be able to receive any further updates.

The latest update to Windows Phone 7 is build 7392 - officially version 7.0.7392.0 - which fixes problems with nine digital security certificates issued by a third party.  However, people who managed to ‘force’ version 7390 onto their phones instead of waiting for an update via their Zune PC software won’t be able to receive this… or any further OS revisions.

Chris Walsh, who developed an unofficial updater, has subsequently taken his tool offline and is working to resolve problems with ‘Walshed’ phones.
