BBX announced as the next platform for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets

RIM has announced BlackBerry BBX during the BlackBerry Developer Conference today. It’ll be the next generation of BlackBerry platform, combining elements of the existing BlackBerry smartphone platform and the QNX platform used by the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Apps built for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will also run on BBX. In addition, RIM announced a developer beta of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 with support for running Android applications.

The company says more details about BBX products and availability will be provided at a later date.

Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM, said "With nearly 5 million BlackBerry apps downloaded daily, our customers have made BlackBerry one of the most profitable platforms for developers. At DevCon today, we're giving developers the tools they need to build richer applications and we’re providing direction on how to best develop their smartphone and tablet apps as the BlackBerry and QNX platforms converge into our next generation BBX platform."
