Mobile privacy company Whisper Systems joins Twitter

Mobile privacy and security company Whisper Systems, which is probably best known for creating encryption applications that were used by protesters in Egypt earlier this year, has been acquired by Twitter. Country-specific versions of the RedPhone and TextSecure apps were created in February following the original US-only release.

The company says its software will continue to be available in the future, although products and services are temporarily being taken offline during the ‘transition’ to Twitter.

In a blog post, Whisper Systems said “Thanks to everyone who beta tested our software, sent us encouraging emails, filed thoughtful bug reports, and in general kept us going with your enthusiasm and support. We couldn't have done it without you, and we hope that we can continue to meet your expectations for software that helps provide security and privacy.”
