Mobile music discovers service Shazam has been taking a look back at 2011 and predicting the music artists to watch in 2012. The service, which enables consumers to identify tunes using their mobile phones, has analysed customer data to create a list of the music acts it thinks are most likely to succeed next year.
This year, UK singer Adele was ‘tagged’ more than any other artist, with her songs identified by Shazam more than six million times. Adele’s song ‘Rolling in the Deep’ topped the Shazam 2011 worldwide chart with almost 4.2 million tags. In the UK, the track Mr. Saxobeat by Alexandra Stan was the most-identified.
Shazam predicts the artists most likely to make headlines worldwide in 2012 are Frank Ocean, A$AP Rocky, YG, Kreayshawn, Lana Del Rey, Spector, Azealia Banks, Friends, Michael Kiwanuka and Excision. Its UK predictions for 2011 included Clare Maguire, Jessie J and James Blake.
Will Mills, Shazam’s Director of Music and Content, said “The music industry continues to evolve as mobile technology has accelerated the pace of digital adoption and enables people to interact with music wherever they are. People’s favorite sources for music discovery have evolved beyond radio and clubs into TV and advertising, driving awareness of new artists as well as purchases of tracks by long-established acts.”
