Amazon.com announces quarterly figures as Kindle Fire becomes best-selling Android tablet

Amazon.com has announced financial results for the first quarter of its current financial year.  Net sales were up 34% year-on-year to $13.18 billion (£8.1 billion), although net income was down by 35% to $130 million. The next quarter is expected to see a similar pattern as sales increase but profits fall.

Amazon’s Android-based Kindle Fire tablet is still the bestselling, most gifted and most wished-for product on the US-based website. The company also recently launched the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi and Kindle Touch 3G ebook readers in the UK and other markets ahead of schedule.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, said “I’m excited to announce that we now have more than 130,000 new, in-copyright books that are exclusive to the Kindle Store – you won’t find them anywhere else. Kindle is the bestselling e-reader in the world by far, and I assure you we’ll keep working hard so that the Kindle Store remains yet another reason to buy a Kindle!”

Figures released by comScore this week show the Amazon Kindle Fire to be the leading Android tablet in the USA with a 54.4% share of the market, followed by Samsung’s Galaxy Tab family at 15.4% and the Motorola Xoom with a 7.0% share.

Amazon definitely produces great products. The Kindle Store is one of the best features of the Kindle products because it offers users a huge variety of reading content, and it's expanding every day!
