EE says Lenovo’s new Yoga 5G convertible laptop will be launched exclusively on its mobile network in the UK.

The Lenovo Yoga 5G (known in some markets as the Lenovo Flex 5G) is described by its manufacturer as the world’s first 5G PC. It has a 14-inch touch display and runs Windows 10. A battery life of up to 24 hours is promised, thanks to Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute Platform.

5G connectivity is currently available from EE in 80 towns and cities across the UK.

Johnson Jia, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Consumer Business Segment in Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group, said “Lenovo introduced the world’s first 5G laptop to equip the mobile generation with smarter technology for always-on connectivity and computing. The hardware is just the first step. With our strategic partnerships with 5G network carriers such as EE, consumers will now be able to access easier, faster and more secure connectivity seamlessly. As 5G computing holds the power to transform user experiences, we believe it can ultimately disrupt the PC industry for the better.”

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division - the parent company of EE - said “Our customers already enjoy the UK’s best mobile experience, and as leaders in 5G, those with the Lenovo Yoga 5G on EE will be able to make the most from our super-fast, high capacity network. As Lenovo’s exclusive partner in the UK, we will help customers get to grips with what this innovative PC has to offer on the go, whether that’s for work, online gaming, or watching the latest HD movies”.

The Lenovo Yoga 5G laptop will be available later this year on EE pay monthly price plans. These prices haven't been confirmed; SIM-free pricing in North America is expected to be from $1,499 (around £1,200).

Last year, the Google I/O developer conference gave us plenty of product announcements: Google Glass, the Nexus 7 tablet, the Nexus Q device and the Jelly Bean version of Android. This year’s announcements were less dramatic: a streaming music service, a Google-friendlier Galaxy S4 and some game development tools. Coincidentally (or perhaps not) Apple announced its 50 billionth app download in the middle of the event.

ExclusiveReports about mobile phone calls cause an increase in blood pressure

Mark Bridge writes:

I was on the radio for a few minutes this morning. Nick Ferrari on LBC 97.3 FM was talking to me about a recent survey that noted a rise in blood pressure when people received calls on their mobile phones. As I waited to go on-air, a producer asked me what I thought. “Storm in a teacup”, I said. Well, it seemed better than “Makes my blood boil”.

ExclusiveDevice keeps internet on when power goes off

Michael Scaturro of voanews.com writes:

A team of Americans and Kenyans has developed a new Internet router - and it's creating buzz. That's because it is an affordable, reliable solution for people without consistent Internet access. It can run while plugged in or on battery power, jump between networks at will, and become a mobile hotspot for multiple devices. The team presented the device - called the Brck [pronounced Brick] - at the Re:publica tech conference in Berlin.

Nokia has had a busy few days. First came the Asha 501, a ‘smartphone lite’ that introduced developers to a new version of the company’s Asha platform. This was followed by the Lumia 928, which is a Windows Phone 8 handset exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the USA. It’s quite like the Nokia 920, so we’re not missing out too much.

Mobile phone use in Africa has spread far, wide and fast. By the end of last year, it was estimated that 70 percent of the population would have a mobile phone. Now, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says it’s using the technology to save lives.
