Fixed-line telecoms provider Alpha Telecom has announced the launch of a UK virtual mobile network called Alpha Mobile. It’s a prepaid mobile service that’s expected to be available from over 90,000 retail stores across the UK by the end the year.

Buying a £30 SIM from the MVNO will give customers what the company describes as ‘unlimited calls’ to landlines and/or mobiles in more than 75 countries. Each £30 top-up is valid for 30 days.

Zafar Mirza, CEO of Alpha Mobile, said “Following the 16-year successful heritage of Alpha Telecom our landline service, we’ve launched Alpha Mobile taking our customer promise to deliver high quality, low-cost products and services, to the mobile market. Alpha Mobile is the ideal service for anyone wanting to save money on UK and international calls when using their mobile device.”

Alpha Mobile runs on the Vodafone UK network via Vodafone’s aggregation partner Cognatel. Terms for the ‘unlimited call’ package limit the total monthly usage to a maximum of 1500 minutes.

With less than a fortnight until Christmas, it’s probably time to order the turkey and start thinking about gifts. What could be a better present than being given your very own mobile operating system?

That’s what’s happening over at HP, which is making its webOS software available to the open source community. The big question now is whether developers will respond with “lovely, just what I wanted” or a slightly embarrassed “oh, I’ve already got one of those.”
