Apple plans photo-analysis tool to protect children

Apple is planning updates to its iOS and iPadOS mobile operating systems that will help prevent the spread of what it describes as Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The updates, which will be introduced later this year in the USA, have three key elements:

Automatically detecting images that depict sexually explicit activities involving a child. This will be performed on the iPhone or iPad, using data supplied by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the USA. It works before images are uploaded to Apple’s iCloud Photos storage, which means Apple is only alerted if users have CSAM in their iCloud Photos account.

Warning when sensitive material is sent via Messages. This is another on-device service, which will warn children about potentially sensitive content whilst keeping their messages unreadable by Apple.

Updating Siri and Search to provide help if users encounter unsafe situations or try to search for CSAM.

Some organisations, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have expressed concerns that the technology could be expanded to spy on users, but Apple has pledged not to do this and says it won’t agree to any government requests to do this. The company insists its system will only be used for the detection of child abuse images.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
