A total investment of over €22 million has been committed to the development of next-generation technologies for the Symbian platform. It follows Symbian's endorsement by the Artemis Joint Technology Initiative, which is an R&D project (sponsored by the European Commission) looking at embedded computer systems.

This development project is being led by the Symbian Foundation as part of a consortium of 24 European technology organisations. The consortium is called SYMBEOSE, standing for 'Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe'. It aims to instigate a series of state-of-the-art development projects that will create new opportunities for Symbian's global stakeholders.
