The Press Complaints Commission has published a report following articles in The Guardian newspaper earlier this year about mobile phone ‘voicemail hacking’ at the News of the World. A News of the World reporter was jailed in January 2007 for hacking into the mobile phones of three royal staff. The PCC says it found no evidence that it was materially misled by the News of the World in 2007 and no evidence that phone message hacking is ongoing.
The Guardian has described the PCC report as “complacent”; a select committee of MPs is expected to mention the subject when it publishes a report on press standards next month. [PCC; The Guardian]
