LG Display, part of the LG Electronics business, has announced the world’s highest-resolution mobile phone display so far.

The new 5.5-inch panel is described as ‘quad HD’, offering 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution with 538 pixels per inch. Standard HD is 1280 x 720p. It uses what LG describes as Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS) technology and is just 1.21mm deep.

The benefit for consumers will include better colour reproduction and sharper images.

Dr Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group, said “LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”

LG hasn’t yet revealed any forthcoming smartphones that will use this new screen.
