Quarterly revenue reached $20.49 billion for the quarter (£13.42 billion; up 18% year-on-year), while net income was up 19% to $6.06 billion.

The company’s Entertainment and Devices Division, which is responsible for Windows Phone and the Xbox gaming platform, posted revenue that had increased by 56% to $2.53 billion.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, said “The bold bets we made on cloud services are paying off as people increasingly choose Microsoft services including Office 365, Windows Azure, Xbox LIVE, and Skype. While there is still work to do, we are optimistic that the bets we’ve made on Windows devices position us well for the long-term.”

As well as announcing quarterly results, Microsoft said Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein would be leaving the company later this year. He’s been with Microsoft for 11 years, spending the last four as CFO.
