Microsoft has launched a wearable fitness-monitoring device. It’s called the Microsoft Band and is currently available in the USA for $199 (around £124).

The device can link via an iOS, Android or Windows Phone app to the new cloud-based Microsoft Health service. This analyses the data and offers personalised fitness advice.

Sensors in the Microsoft Band can monitor the wearer’s heart rate, their calorie burning, their UV exposure and their sleep quality. In addition, Microsoft Band can provide call, email and message notifications. It’s also possible to link it to a Starbucks card for purchases.

Microsoft’s smart band is being seen as a rival to fitness wearables, including products from Fitbit, Jawbone, Nike and Samsung.
