SIM-card manufacturer Gemalto has said it's conducting the world's first trial of bio-sourced SIM cards. The card body is made from plant-based bioplastics derived from corn, sugarcane or potato starch. It's recyclable, compostable and can be incinerated without emitting toxic fumes.

The pilot scheme is being implemented by French operator SFR, which also uses Gemalto-supplied packaging made from recycled paper and plant-based inks. From Spring 2010, customers who need a replacement SIM card will be given a bio-sourced card.
