Neelie KroesThe recent EU decision to appoint Belgium's Herman Van Rompuy as the European Union's first permanent president seems to have overshadowed a number of changes at the European Commission. EC president José Manuel Barroso has unveiled a new team; changes include current telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding moving to take charge of justice, while competition commissioner Neelie Kroes will move to a new 'Digital Agenda' role that is responsible for telecommunications.

Ms Kroes, who comes from the Netherlands, is probably best known for leading the EU's antitrust investigation into Microsoft.

The new roles still need to be approved by the European Parliament; they'll become effective from January 2010. [Press release]
