Texting affects UR spelling, says new research

A study published this week by Cranfield School of Management says that young people’s addition to technology is affecting their learning.

39.3% of 11-18 year olds admitted that text shortcuts damaged the quality of their written English, particularly in terms of spelling, while 59.2% of teenagers admitted to ‘copying and pasting’ information from the internet into schoolwork without reading or changing it.

The survey also suggested that children currently start using mobile phones between the ages of eight and ten. Over 50% of respondents described themselves as being ‘addicted’ to their mobile phones. Cranfield’s research was based on a sample of over 260 students aged 11-18 years old from a UK secondary school in the Midlands. [Press release; report]
