Mobile web sites increase seven-fold in 12 months

dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi mobile internet domain, has calculated that there are around 1.1 million mobile web sites worldwide. That’s up from just 150,000 a year ago. However, it says mobile-friendly destinations only account for around 0.8% of all sites.

The company looked at a wide range of Top Level Domains including .mobi, .com, .net, .uk and .de. It said .mobi was used on 23% of mobile-friendly addresses. Other sites were identified by suffixes or prefixes including /wap (22%), /m (13%), wap. (10%), mobile. (5%), m. (5%) and /pda (3%). dotMobile also calculated that 14% of all mobile sites detected the visiting device and provided mobile-friendly content where appropriate. I reckon there’ll be a fair amount of discussion about these figures in next week’s podcast. [Press release]
