World's first commercial NFC mobile payment system launches

Malaysian mobile phone network Maxis has launched the world’s first commercial ‘contactless’ mobile phone payment system. The Near Field Communication (NFC) system, which follows a number of trial schemes around the world, has been created by Maxis, Nokia, Visa, Maybank and Touch ‘n Go. It means consumers can pay for items in shops, parking and public transport by touching their mobile phone on a special payment point. Customers who buy a Nokia 6212 classic and sign up for Maxis FastTap are currently able to use their phones to purchase goods and services at more than 1,800 Visa payWave locations and can pay for toll, transport, parking and theme park charges at over 3,000 Touch 'n Go points.
