Almost 3 billion SIM cards shipped in 2008

SIMalliance, the trade association for SIM card manufacturers, says global SIM card shipments in 2008 exceeded 2.9 billion units; a 29% increase over the previous year. SIM cards also became more powerful, with an average 11% more memory than in 2007. 14% of all SIMs were enabled for 3G. The figures were announced at SIMposium 2009, the organisation’s annual conference. [Press release]
