EU drops planned smartphone tax

European Union plans that could have added a 14% tax to the price of smartphones with TV receivers and 3.7% on GPS-equipped mobile phones have been dropped. The plans were first suggested in December last year and would have seen most current smartphones reclassified as ‘multi-functional devices’, leading to increased import taxes.
