Android market share to overtake iPhone within 3 years

The total number of devices running the Android operating system will outnumber Apple iPhone handsets by 2012, according to Gartner analyst and vice president Ken Dulaney. He sees Symbian maintaining its number 1 position but losing 10% of its market share… and Apple maintaining its third place with a slight increase. However, Android – currently with less than 2% market share – will be available on an increasing number of devices, giving it an anticipated 14.5% share of the global smartphone market with over 75 million units sold. Windows Mobile and webOS are also expected to make modest increases, whilst the RIM and Linux operating systems will lose out. [Source: AppleInsider.com]
