Consumers want financial benefits for recycling their mobiles

A poll by ABI Research has shown that 38% of consumers in the USA have recycled their old mobile phones. Of those people, over two thirds said they'd donated their phones to charities and had received tax deductions in return. Just 5% had recycled their mobiles without receiving any kind of compensation.

The vast majority of consumers who hadn't yet recycled a mobile phone had said they were prepared to do so. 98% said they'd be happy to say good bye to their old phone… but only if they received cash, in-store credit or a tax deduction. Women were slightly more likely than men to recycle handsets – and over-40s were much more likely to recycle than the under-40s. [Press release; survey]
