Motorola is officially becoming a smartphone company

In yesterday's conference call for investors, Sanjay Jha - Motorola co-CEO and chief exec of its Mobile Devices division – confirmed the company had sold 2 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2009.

He then said "we are just at the beginning stage of our transition to a smartphone company" before later adding "going forward, we'll continue to tightly manage operating expenses as we 'dial down' in some areas, including feature phones, and redirect resources into smartphone innovation, supporting new product launches and building our brand".

Motorola expects to produce at least 20 smartphone models and ship 11-14 million smartphone devices during 2010, accounting for over 50% of its total mobile phone sales.

There was also news that Motorola was planning a direct-to-consumer device with Google in 2010, increasing speculation that an Android-powered 'Nexus Two' could – like the Motorola Droid/Milestone - have a QWERTY keyboard.
