Over 600 million touchscreens were shipped in 2009

Market research company DisplaySearch has calculated that total touchscreen shipments increased 29% year-on-year in 2009 to 606 million units. The majority of these – 62% of all units, or 376 million screens – were for mobile phones.

DisplaySearch forecasts that projected capacitive touch technology will pass resistive touch technology to become the leading touch technology in 2010, measured by revenue.

Jennifer Colegrove PhD, Director of Display Technologies at DisplaySearch, said "Touch screen penetration has been rapidly increasing in mobile phone, PMP/MP3, portable navigation, and other applications. Over the next several years, touch screens will undergo strong growth in large-size applications such as all-in-one PCs, Mini-note/slate PCs, and education/training."
