Saudi Arabia to block BlackBerry Messenger

Following yesterday's announcement from the UAE that certain online BlackBerry services would be blocked from October because they're encrypted and cannot be monitored, Saudi Arabia has said it'll be blocking the BlackBerry Messenger instant messaging service later this month for similar reasons.

Reports earlier this year suggested that the anonymity of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) made it an appealing way for young people in Saudi Arabia to court each other.

There's no ban at the moment - it's reported that the Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission has seen "positive developments" in its discussion with RIM.
