Angry Birds game company picks up $42 million investment

Rovio, the Finnish company that created the Angry Birds series of games, has acquired a $42 million investment (around £26 million). The funding round was led by venture capital firms Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures with participation from the Felicis Ventures fund as well.

As part of the deal, Niklas Zennström of Atomico Ventures - the man who co-founded Skype, Kazaa and Rdio - will be joining the board of Rovio.

Angry Birds is currently played by 40 million people every month. The investment allows Rovio to increase its reach across more countries and markets.

Mikael Hed, CEO and co-founder of Rovio, said “With Angry Birds, we have successfully launched not only a strong new brand, but also a whole new entertainment franchise. Angry Birds will continue to grow, and we aim to create more similar success stories. We will strengthen the position of Rovio and continue building our franchises in gaming, merchandising and broadcast media.”

Rovio currently has 50 employees.
