Microsoft reports record results

In a week of big-name financial figures - including Apple and Nokia - we now have quarterly and annual results from Microsoft Corp.

The company had a record fourth quarter of its financial year, with revenue of $17.37 billion (around £10.66 billion; up 8% year-on-year). And for the full financial year (ending 30th June 2011), Microsoft reported record revenue of $69.94 billion (up 12%). Operating income and net income were also up on 2011.

Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft, said “A strong year of double-digit increases in revenue and earnings is a real credit to all of our Microsoft employees and partners around the world. We continue to see strong business demand across all of our products, from small businesses all the way up to the largest global enterprises. Our move to cloud services continues with the release and momentum of Office 365 and growth in Windows Azure. We’re providing our customers seamless and powerful ways to move to the cloud, and we are well positioned for the coming year.”

The company’s statement didn’t include specific details about its Windows Phone mobile operating system. However, revenue at the Entertainment & Devices Division - responsible for Windows Phone and for the Xbox gaming platform - grew by 30% for the quarter and 45% for the full year.
