Report says mobile internet will overtake fixed-line internet by 2015 in USA

More US internet users will access the internet through mobile devices than through PCs or other fixed-line devices by 2015, according to the latest Worldwide New Media Market Model from the International Data Corporation.

IDC expects the number of mobile internet users to increase by a compound annual growth rate of 16.6% between 2010 and 2015, helped by the growth in smartphone and tablet sales. It says Western Europe and Japan will closely follow the USA with this trend.

Karsten Weide, research vice president for Media and Entertainment at IDC, said “Forget what we have taken for granted on how consumers use the Internet. Soon, more users will access the Web using mobile devices than using PCs, and it's going to make the Internet a very different place.”

The Worldwide New Media Market Model also predicts that 40% of the world’s population will have access to the internet in 2015, when advertisers will spend $138 billion online and consumers will spend $1,285 billion on e-commerce.
