France Telecom meets government after another staff suicide

The chief executive of France Telecom, Didier Lombard, is meeting French labour minister Xavier Darcos after the 23rd suicide by a France Telecom member of staff within 18 months. An emergency board meeting is also being held within the next few weeks. The company currently employs over 102,000 staff; around 10,000 have seen their roles reorganised in the last three years with a further 22,000 redundancies. France is said to have a relatively high suicide rate; on average 17.8 people per 100,000 take their own lives. [Sources: ManagementToday.co.uk; Telegraph.co.uk]
