Ofcom report shows growth in 4G coverage and mobile data usage

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has just published its Connected Nations report (previously known as the Infrastructure Report), which shows how the UK’s communications infrastructure has changed in the past 12 months.

It notes that the roll-out of 4G coverage means that 67% of premises in the UK can now get 4G service from three of the ‘big four’ operators. That compares with 37% in 2014.

However, it also points out that 13% of the UK’s land area is in a ‘not spot’ for 2G or 3G voice coverage and only 58% is covered by all four of the major networks.

There are 83.7 million active mobile connections in the UK – more than one per person – with each SIM card using an average 870MB per month (up from 530MB in 2014).

Alongside the report, Ofcom has announced a mobile app that’ll let consumers check their home WiFi to see if it’s suffering from interference. The free Ofcom WiFi Checker app is available for iOS and Android.
