A third of all next year’s mobiles will be motion-sensitive

One in three of all mobile phones shipped worldwide in 2010 will contain an accelerometer, according to electronic component research company  iSuppli Corp. Accelerometers are the microelectromechanical sensors (MEMS) that detect when a mobile phone is tilted on its side or shaken. This year the company reckons there’ll be 20% penetration, compared with just 1 in 11 phones in 2008.

So far in 2009, 18.3% of all new handsets have included an accelerometer; that’s 38% of new Nokia phones and 95% of Sony Ericsson devices. [Press release]
