Qualcomm dual-core 1.5GHz chips could be in phones this year

Qualcomm's new dual-core QSD8672 Snapdragon chip, which can run at up to 1.5GHz, will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2010, the company said yesterday. This means manufacturers could release 1.5GHz smartphones by Christmas, although early 2011 seems more likely. The chip is designed for smartphones, tablet computers and budget laptops.

Rival Texas Instruments also plans to start shipping a dual-core mobile chip – the 1GHz OMAP4430 – this year.
