Shazam uses its mobile music tagging service to predict 2011 hits

Music discovery service Shazam, which enables its users to identify tunes using their mobile phones, has produced a list of the music acts it thinks are most likely to succeed in 2011.

Shazam’s chart is driven by the millions of people who use the service to identify the music they hear. Thanks to deals with music publishers, the service is able to identify pre-release tracks as well as new releases.

The UK acts named as the most likely to succeed in 2011 are Nero, Clare Maguire, Jessie J, James Blake and The Vaccines. The emerging US acts are Jay Electronica, MNDR, J Cole, CyHi Da Prynce and Wiz Khalifa.

This isn’t merely a publicity stunt; the company has previously highlighted Ellie Goulding and Nicki Minaj as acts to watch in 2010, Lady Gaga and Florence + The Machine in 2009, plus The Ting Tings and Duffy in 2008.

The Shazam application can be found on the iTunes App Store, Android Market, Ovi Store by Nokia, BlackBerry App World, Samsung App Store and Windows Phone Marketplace. Shazam’s service is also still available in the UK via its 2580 shortcode.

As we've previously mentioned, The Fonecast will be broadcasting its own 2011 predictions for the UK mobile phone industry in the last podcast before Christmas.
