Standard mini-SIM, micro-SIM and nano-SIM available with just one card

Smart card specialist Oberthur Technologies has announced a new product called MultiSIM, which uses a single card to deliver the standard mini-SIM, micro-SIM and nano-SIM designs. It has a detachable body enabling the card to maintain a ‘thin’ nano-SIM form factor that’s compliant with European Telecommunications Standard Institute standards while remaining thicker for the other two formats.

In simple terms, it means that consumers can use the same SIM card in any mobile phone without needing to ask their network operator to activate a different SIM. In addition, operators no longer need to stock multiple SIM card variants.

Christian Lefebvre, Managing Director of the Telecom Product Line at Oberthur Technologies, said “The MultiSIM introducing has been possible thanks to our world-class R&D and manufacturing capabilities. Our key challenge was to support the different card body thicknesses of the plugs required by the standards. We met this challenge using an innovative patent-pending process. We are delighted to offer end-users a convenient means to use their SIM card and to help operators to optimize their stock management”.

This is believed to be the first SIM card that can be adapted to all three major SIM formats.
