Samsung agrees to pay patent licensing fees to Ericsson

Ericsson and Samsung have reached a multi-year agreement on global patent licenses that cover GSM, UMTS and LTE standards.

It ends complaints made by both companies to the US International Trade Commission (ITC) and lawsuits in the USA.

The agreement includes an initial payment from Samsung to Ericsson as well as ongoing royalty payments. Although full details of the agreement are confidential, Ericsson expects the initial payment to affect its net income by  SEK 3.3 billion (£309 million).

Kasim Alfalahi, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson, said “We are pleased that we could reach a mutually fair and reasonable agreement with Samsung. We always viewed litigation as a last resort. This agreement allows us to continue to focus on bringing new technology to the global market and provides an incentive to other innovators to share their own ideas.”
