Mobile tickets coming to London river buses

Mobile ticketing is coming to river buses in London within the next couple of months, enabling customers to pay for their trip via any compatible smartphone.

Thames Clippers, which runs boat services that serve around three million commuters and visitors every year, has signed a five-year agreement with London-based Masabi.

Its river bus services run from Putney along the Thames to Woolwich, with some vessels providing free WiFi and on-board Costa Coffee shops.

The new Thames Clippers mobile tickets will use Masabi’s app-based JustRide product.

Sean Collins, CEO of Thames Clippers, said “At Thames Clippers we continually look at ways to improve the customer experience in all areas. Recently our focus has been on our ticketing systems and the introduction of a mobile system. The addition of mobile ticketing means that our passengers will now be able to buy their tickets anywhere, without the need to queue at ticket machines or fumble for the correct change. We are thrilled to be working with Masabi to be launching this system.”

Masabi currently provides mobile ticketing for 13 of the UK’s rail operators as well as the cities of Boston and San Diego in the USA.

We talked about mobile ticketing with Ben Whitaker of Masabi in our podcast on 11th June 2010. You can listen to the interview via the built-in audio player on our website or by downloading the MP3 file.
