Orange is selling its controlling share in Orange Uganda to Africell

French telecoms giant Orange has signed an agreement with Africell Holding to sell its majority stake in mobile network Orange Uganda.

In a statement, Orange said “This transaction marks a new step in the Orange Group’s asset portfolio optimisation strategy for which Africa and the Middle-East remain a strategic priority”.

Africell runs mobile networks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gambia and Sierra Leone, with over 7 million customers in Q4 2013.

Orange Uganda was created in 2008 in partnership with Hits Telecom Uganda and had 620,000 customers at the end of last year.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval.
