Mobile users would rather drop calls than miss messages, says Ofcom research

UK communications regulator Ofcom has published a report looking at the use of online communication services. The report reveals that WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app among UK adults, with 76% of respondents having used it in the past three months.

US mobile data usage doubles within a year

Wireless communications trade organisation CTIA-The Wireless Association has found that mobile data usage exceeded 1.1 trillion MB from July 2011 to June 2012, a 104% increase from the previous 12 months.

There are now 321.7 million mobile connections in the USA, the equivalent of 101% mobile penetration.

Mobile messaging will almost double in the next five years

New report says Instant Messaging will be the biggest driver

Juniper Research has forecast that the amount of mobile messaging traffic worldwide will reach 28.2 trillion messages per year by 2017, nearly double the 14.7 trillion messages expected to be sent this year.

It says most of this growth will come from instant messaging (IM), which will account for over a quarter of all mobile messages in five years’ time.
